Somo is one of the best surfing spots in Spain to learn and improve your surfing. With a great surf culture (Latas is one surf camp out of many more in the area) of local and international surfers, it has become a better and cheaper alternative than surfing in San Sebastian or other areas nearby.
On the other side, Somo and Loredo have a quite big beach in which we can find several spots along the same beach. Each spot offers different possibilities for surfers of all levels. Some are suited for surf school or entry level and others welcome advanced and expert surfers.
It’s highly advises to know the different spots that you can find in order to get the most out of the surf in Somo. This way, you must evaluate and decide which one is suited for your current skills, without forgetting about the swell an surf conditions. Anyway, you should always ask your surf instructors about which spot you must surf at.
Loredo beach is one of the best, if not the best, to start practizing surf. On the east of the beach and with easy access from the towns parking, this spot offers good waves to start learning.
Level: beginners / intermediate.
The name comes from the street that gives access to it, which ends up in front of this spot. Under normal conditions, it offers good waves for surfers that are improving their technique as well as for advanced surfers. Anyway, if the conditions are not ideal and the swell is big, we only recommed surfing here if you’re and advanced surfer. Locals surf here and you should know if it’s above your possibilities. You can always move east and catch more waves in Loredo beach.
Level: intermediate / advanced
La Curva Spot
La Curva is opposite to the forest on top of the dunes, a protected natural landscape. This one is a quite large surfing spot. It’s very easy to differenciate it from the rest as you can see a big rock that separates it from the easter spots and also because is located at the curved part of the beach. A spot often packed with locals, it should give you a hint about the level you need for surfing here.
Level: advanced / expert
Located in front of the town’s parking and the Surf Café Bar, this spot is normally the most crowded one, mainly in summer. However, it counts with a couple of spots on it so it offers possibilities for several levels.
Level: from beginner to advanced
El Puntal is located on the western part of the beach, alongside the sand dunes that are formed at the end of it. The beach’s bottom reduces in depth what causes waves to be smaller and currents weaker. If the conditions are strong on the main part of the beach, we recommend you to move towards this part of the beach.
Level: beginner / intermediate.
NOTE: respect the sea
This little guide about surfing in somo and its spots is aimed at helping you choose which one suits you most. However, you always recommend you to ask one of your surf camp instructors. Always observ the sea and leave your ego at the beach. Go and surf the spot that suits your skills and you will enjoy the surfing session at its most.
