Big wave surf spots

Big wave surf spots are in the dreams and nightmares of the best surfers in the world. Surfing can be a dangerous sport. The power of the ocean is vast, unpredictable, and can turn a pleasant surfing session into a nightmare with little (or no) warning before hitting you with all its strenght.

However, when you throw monster-sized waves into the equation, surfing becomes inherently dangerous. A challenge only made to tackle by those with great experience, training and (we have to admit that) a couple of f**ng big balls (or ovaries).

Big-wave surfing is no joke. It’s a sport that only elite-level surfers should take part in, and something that (even for the best surfers on the planet) can be a lethal and life endangering experience at any moment. And although there are monster waves that break all over the globe on any given day, below is our list of some of our favorite big wave surf spots of the planet.

Mavericks, California

Mavericks is in Half Moon Bay in Northern California and it has claimed the life of legendary Hawaiian big-wave surfer Mark Foo.

Nazaré, Portugal

Nazaré is a small fishing village in Portugal, and the best-known spot in the region is Praia do Norte, where you can see this massive giant wave unleashing its power at a close distance from the shore. The spaniard Natxo González got the first 10 in this big wave competition.

Belharra, France

This footage shows elite surfer Jamie Mitchell paddeling into one of the biggest waves ever attempted at Belharra, France. The move turns out badly as he experiences a terrifying wipeout of historic proportions.

Teahupoo, Tahiti

Tehaupoo is one of the most challenging surf breaks in the world due to the nature of its shape. It looks completely different to other waves as it looks like the ocean is folding over itself rather than a normal waves. A kind of gargantuan nature expression that event the best surfers of the universe fear. In the past, it has claimed the life of Tahitian Briece Taerea.

Jaws, Maui

The magic of this wave is its perfection. This wave plays host to the very best of men and women big-wave surfers. Its a heavy wave and amazing to watch when the conditions are just right.

Bonus: Santa Marina, Loredo

To complete the list, we added the Santa Marina right handed break not because is one of the biggest in the world but rather because is our local big wave surf spot. When the swell is big you can see waves up to 6 or 7 meters and local surfers riding this smaller monster located at Somo international surfing spot.
