Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho starred in a shocking episode during the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge

Last Tuesday, February 11, the WSL Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge tooked place at the legendary wave of Nazaré, Portugal, known as the largest wave of the world. This was the first edition in the history of a tow-in surfing championship, a technique to catch big waves being dragged by jet skis.

The competition consisted of 10 duets, formed by surfer and jet ski, who surfed massive waves between 12 and 20 meters high. The event had a great impact and many people approached Nazaré to see such a show and during the day we enjoyed really epic moments.

The challenge was going great until some minutes for the end. The WSL stopped their live broadcasting and when they resumed the connection, they announced the end of the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge with images of the rescue team attending a surfer on the shore.

What happened during those moments was a tremendous wipeout suffered by the Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho. At that time, his companion with jet ski came to the rescue him and fleeing the massive wave that was chasing them, another wave caught them and they crashed. Alex Botelho lost consciousness becouse of the crashing with the jet ski. Immediately, the other emergency services went to rescue Alex Botelho and reanimate him, and then they evacuated him to the hospital in Santa Marina de Lisboa, where he currently remains “stable and under observation.”
