Sri Lanka is a famous surf trip desination that attracts tourists and surfers from all over the world. One of the main reasons answers to the fact that their surf spots welcome beginners as well as advanced surfers. If you add its wonderful landscapes, culture and kindness of their people, it becomes one of our favorite places to surf in the world far away from our surf camp in Somo.
Surf in Sri Lanka: perfect waves for all publics all year round
The country has different seasonal patters on each side of the island. While one side might be choppy, the other will be calmed, making Sri Lanka perfect for surfing all year round. The first season in the west and south of the island takes place between november and may and the waves are just too perfect to be true. On the other side, on the east, the surfing season goes from april until september. Waves here are longer. What matters to you is that you can surf in Sri Lanka any time of the year. All you have to do is switch to the side of the island that has the perfect conditions at an specific time.
Waves in Sri Lanka are perfect and long. They offer dream-like sights when you’re sliding on top of them with your surfboard: white sand beaches, beautiful dense jungle views, sun and cristal clear waters. Moreover, the waves aren’t big the way the are in Hawaii or Australia, something beginners will appreciate. Most famous spots are Ahangama, Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa on the southwest; Mirissa Beach and Weligama Beach on the south and Arugam Bay on the east.
Ahangama town is located on the opposite side of a wonderful waves spot, surrounded by a vast and dense jungle. Is the place we’ve chosen for our first surf camp in sri lanka. Moreover, the place is found between Weligama Beach and Mirissa Beach, what makes it perfect for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers.

Located south of Weligama Beach, Mirissa Beach offers an incredible crescent of palm trees jungle sided by rocky reefs. A perfect surfing spot for advanced and intermediate surfers, with perfect right and left sided barrels. You will truly improve your surfing here.
Weligama Beach is a surf spot that offers consistent waves all year round. One of the favorite of most people as you can start to learn as a beginners and also get better if you’re an intermediate surfer. There are several wave spots around, each one of the with their own waves. One of them is Mirissa Beach, cited above.
Arugam Bay is located on the east side of Sri Lanka and the season here starts when it’s raining on the other side of the island. With several surf spots, Arugam Bay must be visited from april until september. This spot offers possibilities for all levels.
This area is 120km south of the city of Colombo and it’s become very popular as is not only a place for surfing but also for partying. You won’t get bored here!
Unawatuna is an area mainly designed for family holidays. Nightlife is not the best in Sri Lanka, but if you want to chill and spend some days with your family, this is your surfing and touristic spot of reference in the island. Also, you can ask the locals which are the best line-ups for surfing.
